Downward Entanglements and Whispering Back

This is a collaboration between Lottie Simpson and Eira Basset exploring their embodied practice of connecting with the landscape in Iceland. They approached each location with a ritual in which they were present, open and empathetic with the land, letting it guide their bodies. Their bodies merge with the land, dissolving the barrier between species and geological matter, in turn encouraging awareness of our entanglement. Our sense of scale and perspective is challenged when close-up shots of moss look like trees, or they sink into an upside-down canyon. This is inspired by the Scottish poet and writer Nan Shepard’s proposition that the landscape doesn’t have a single focal point, challenging the human-centric perspective, (2025).
